The position of Director, Hardware Engineering leads projects within a team of hardware, mechanical and software engineers, working on programs from our OBD-II devices through to manufacturing test fixtures and internal test tools. The position will include working closely with our JDM manufacturing partners to direct their role in the development of new products and coordinating the specification, test and development of our second generation ASIC. In addition, the Director of Hardware Engineering may also serve at times as architect, engineer, and designer for a few high profile, select projects.

In this role, you will directly manage the electrical, RF and system integration teams and partner closely with product, mechanical, industrial design and software teams as required.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Design, develop, and implement electrical architectures from prototype to mass production.

  • Work with compliance organizations to make sure designs meet regulatory and/or safety requirements.

  • Manage and provide technical leadership to a team of mixed skillset engineers.

  • Oversee recruiting and hiring activities across all of the electrical engineering domains - power, digital, mixed signal.

  • Lead architecture and development to solve complex problems.

  • Schematic capture, board layout, verification, bringup.

  • Manage the challenges encountered during the design phase and ensure delivery on time, cost and quality for the elements assigned to the team.

  • Work with JDM partner on schedules, cost, supply chain, test and certification activities.

  • Develop and maintain hardware vendor relations.

  • Work with the hardware program manager to schedule hardware builds, change requests and verification activities.

  • Manage and minimize cost of BOM on the PLM system.

  • Schedule work and activities for all department staff. Plan top-down design schedules and resource plans with cross-functional product development team to meet Hardware Engineering resource requests.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

  • Supervise a team of engineers located in California, Texas and Taiwan.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree or higher in engineering, physics or math or equivalent, relevant experience (MSC preferred).

  • Minimum of 12 years of experience in developing hardware products.

  • Minimum of 10 years as an Electrical Engineer.

  • Demonstration of full life cycle development of at least two products.

  • Travel to Asia and other ODM & CM countries supporting prototype and pilot builds as required.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

  • Must have legal right to work in the U.S.

Technical Skills:

  • Thorough knowledge of MS-Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access).

  • Familiar with FPGA and development in either Verilog or VHDL.

  • In-depth knowledge of schematic capture, simulation, layout, and verification with at least one toolchain. (ORCAD is preferred).
